Being Authentic Is Your Superpower

The realest founders always win.

There’s a lie too many founders believe that to win, you have to play a role. Talk like a “founder.” Dress like one. Act like you’ve got it all together, even when you’re barely holding it down.

I get it. When I started Upsie, I tried to fit that mold too. I walked into rooms where no one looked like me, trying to prove I belonged. I raised over $30 million and sold my company, but the biggest breakthrough didn’t come from a pitch deck... it came when I realized being ME was my greatest advantage.

Authenticity is your edge.

When you stop pretending and lead with truth on who you are, where you come from and what you believe, everything changes. Real founders attract real believers. Teams that show up for the mission, not just the money. Investors who bet on you, not just the market.

The startup game is already brutal. Why add the weight of being someone you’re not?

The most powerful founders aren’t the loudest, they’re the ones who are real. The ones who say, “This is who I am. This is what I’m building. Take it or leave it.”

That’s what makes people believe. That’s what builds movements.

So stop dimming your light to make others comfortable. Be proud of your story... the wins, the losses, the scars.

Because when you’re authentic, you’re free. And when you’re free, you build differently.

But here’s the truth: you don’t win by impressing investors. You win by serving customers. VCs don’t create markets. Customers do. If your business only works when investors believe in it, you don’t have a business...
Build Relationships Before You Need Money
Too many founders start building investor relationships when they’re already running out of runway. They hit “fundraising mode” and scramble to meet as many people as possible, hoping for a yes before the money runs out. But that’s not how real relationships work. Here’s the truth — fundraising starts long before you’re raising. The founders who raise the fastest aren’t the luckiest; they’re th...
